The Story Behind GMT: From Passion to Product
By Pedro Ampuero
Let’s take it back to where it all began. Guillermo Garcimonte is a renowned knife maker from Spain, widely known for his high-end custom knives. Guillermo learned his craft from the prestigious Joe Keeslar in the United States and holds the Journeyman Smith title from the American Bladesmith Society. If you know anything about knives, you’ve likely seen his work. His knives are legendary—craftsmanship at its finest—and the demand for them is through the roof. With a waiting list stretching over two years, it became clear that many hunters like me couldn’t get access to his blades.
To meet this growing demand, Guillermo decided to create something new: a line of factory-made knives designed by him, especially for the outdoor and military sectors. He called this new project GMT, or GarciMonte Tactical.
As the hunting community is tight-knit, it didn’t take long for our paths to cross. When we met, we immediately connected over our shared love for hunting—and, of course, knives. We exchanged stories, experiences, and thoughts about the tools we use. I shared one of my frustrations: I needed a blade that would stay sharp in the field but could also be easily resharpened by someone like me, who isn’t naturally skilled at sharpening knives. I’d been using interchangeable blades for certain tasks, but they’d often break inside the animals, I’d cut myself, or they’d pop out in the middle of the work.
That’s when Guillermo explained his GMT project, and we immediately knew we had something special. We agreed that we needed to take it further and expand the brand into the hunting world. Not only would we provide our input, but we’d also share the story and help spread the word about these knives. The combination of Guillermo’s knife-making expertise, our extensive hunting experience, and Victoria’s knowledge of building a brand and platform is what you see today in GMT
What started as a small business with three passionate hunters behind it has grown into a brand that values every bit of support and feedback from the community. We’re here because of our shared love for the hunt and the knives that help make it all possible.
