How to Choose the Best Knife Model for You
By: Pedro De Ampuero
At GMT, our line of products may be small, but it covers a wide range of users and scenarios. Every hunter has their own set of needs, and I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what makes the ideal knife for different hunts. In this post, I want to share my thought process when deciding what knife I’ll take on my next adventure!
Ace of Diamonds: The Everyday Carry Knife
When I’m heading out for any type of hunt, I always bring the Ace of Diamonds with me. It’s a compact, lightweight knife that fits easily anywhere, and I love having it close by at all times. I clip it to my bino harness so it’s always accessible when I need it. But you could easily clip it to your belt, backpack, or slip it into a pocket—whatever works best for you.
The reason I take this knife everywhere is because it’s so well-rounded. Whether I’m hunting small game or simply need a reliable tool for any task, this knife is up to the job. It’s light, efficient, and capable of doing a variety of tasks in the field. Plus, on mountain hunts where weight is a real issue, it’s all I need to handle skinning and butchering, saving me the trouble of carrying multiple knives. It's my go-to knife for those moments when versatility and convenience are key.
Highland Skinner: For Larger Game and Skinning
When I’m hunting larger animals—like wild boar, stags, or moose—or if I need to take the skin off an animal, I turn to the Highland Skinner. Its design is tailored for skinning and handling larger game, with a bigger handle that comfortably fits all four fingers, making it easier to work on larger bodied animals. The longer blade gives me the extra leverage I need to speed up the process.
But what I really love about the Highland Skinner is the blade tip. The design allows me to make precise cuts without leaving behind unnecessary meat or holes in the skin, which is essential if I want to preserve the hide. It’s a tool built specifically for these tasks, making the process much more efficient and effective.
Nomad Worker: The Heavy Duty, All-Purpose Knife
For those who prefer a bigger, more robust knife that can handle anything the wilderness throws at you, the Nomad Worker is the way to go. It’s the knife I reach for when weight isn’t a primary concern, and when I know I’ll be doing a variety of camp tasks—from chopping wood and building f ires to handling tougher jobs like preparing large game or even self-defense if necessary. The Nomad Worker is the knife you want when you need strength and durability. It’s perfect for those rugged hunts where you can’t predict every task you’ll face. It’s a great backup for those tougher situations when you don’t want to risk overusing a more delicate knife like the Ace of Diamonds or Highland Skinner.
The GMT Line: Designed to Work Together
The best part about GMT knives is that they’re designed to complement each other. Each one serves a specific purpose, and together, they make an ideal set for any hunter’s arsenal. Whether you’re looking for a lightweight everyday carry knife, a skinning tool for large game, or a heavy-duty camp companion, the GMT line has you covered
