GMT Knife Care: Keep Your Blade in Top Shape
BLADE MAINTENANCE
We’ll categorize the maintenance by model since the key factor is the type of steel.
1. Ace of Diamonds / Highland Skinner (ELMAX Steel)
Maintaining these knives couldn’t be easier. Since they are stainless, you don’t have to worry about storing them without cleaning. Whenever needed, simply wash them with soap and water and they’ll be as good as new.
2. Nomad Worker (K720 Carbon Steel)
Carbon steel requires more frequent maintenance as rust spots may appear, especially in areas where the bluing wears off due to use. After using your knife, clean it with soap and water, then dry it with a cloth. After that, apply a light coat of oil to create a protective layer on the blade, any gun oil will work.
If the bluing wears off significantly, you can reapply a cold bluing treatment using any of the many products available on the market. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions! The final color of the bluing may vary depending on the product and application time.
HANDLE MAINTENANCE
-
Micarta Handles: Since micarta is a completely inert material, simply washing it with soap and water will do the job, no worries. If you want to give your micarta handle an extra shine, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly, wait an hour and then wipe it off with a paper towel. You’ll see the difference!
-
Granadillo Wood Handles: Since granadillo is a natural material, after cleaning it with soap and water, it’s best to apply a layer of oil to keep the wood hydrated. Any wood oil will do, though I personally prefer purified linseed oil.
